# PROS AND CONS
+ what works
- +On-device AI tagging and face recognition with no cloud calls
- +Solid Docker setup that runs on a NAS, Raspberry Pi, or small VPS
- +WebDAV and PWA support, so phone backup works via apps like PhotoSync
- +Active development and frequent releases
− watch out for
- −No first-party iOS or Android app; mobile relies on third-party clients or the PWA
- −Some features (extra user roles, vector and satellite maps, hardened security) are gated behind paid Essentials and Plus memberships
- −Initial indexing on large libraries is CPU-heavy and slow on low-end hardware
- −Map tiles and reverse geocoding hit external services by default
# PRIVACY NOTES
Photos, metadata, and the search index stay on the host you run PhotoPrism on. Indexing, face recognition, and labelling run locally with bundled models, so image content is not sent to a cloud service. Reverse geocoding and map tiles are fetched from third parties at request time, which leaks coordinates unless you swap providers or proxy them. PhotoPrism UG is based in Berlin and operates under German and EU law.
