# PROS AND CONS
+ what works
- +Full data ownership with no vendor relationship in the self-hosted path
- +Broad feature set beyond files: Talk, Calendar, Contacts, Office, Deck, Mail
- +Large app ecosystem and active upstream with regular Hub releases
- +AGPLv3 server with publicly auditable code
− watch out for
- −PHP stack with a real operational footprint; not a "set and forget" install
- −Performance tuning (Redis, APCu, proper database) matters once you scale past a few users
- −End-to-end encryption is opt-in per folder, not the default for all files
- −Mobile and desktop sync clients have a long history of rough edges on large libraries
# PRIVACY NOTES
Self-hosting keeps file contents, sharing metadata, and user accounts on infrastructure you control. Nextcloud does not phone home from the core server. End-to-end encryption is available for selected files and folders via the E2EE app, but the default at-rest posture is server-side encryption with keys the operator manages. Operational privacy depends on the operator hardening the host, configuring TLS, managing backups, and keeping the app catalog patched. Nextcloud GmbH is based in Stuttgart, Germany; the managed Nextcloud One service is hosted in Germany under GDPR.
