# PROS AND CONS
+ what works
- +End-to-end encryption on by default, including subject lines and calendar data
- +Free tier with 1 GB storage and no ads
- +Clients are open source (GPLv3) and available on F-Droid
- +Post-quantum encryption primitives shipped in the default scheme
− watch out for
- −No IMAP or third-party client support; you must use Tuta's apps
- −Server code is not open source, so the backend can't be independently audited
- −No PGP interop, so encryption with non-Tuta users relies on password-protected message links
# PRIVACY NOTES
Mail bodies, subject lines, attachments, contacts, and calendar entries are encrypted on Tuta's servers; envelope addresses and timestamps are not, since the SMTP network needs them. Tuta uses its own encryption scheme (now including post-quantum primitives) rather than PGP, so interop with outside PGP users is not supported. Tutao GmbH is based in Hanover and operates under German and EU law. Tuta publishes a transparency report and warrant canary, and only acts on valid German court orders.
